Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney wrote of Liam O’Flynn’s music: “behind these tunes you can hear freedom as well as discipline, elegy as well as elation, a longing for solitude as well as a love of the seisiun.” A founding member of the well-known folk group Planxty, Liam was equally comfortable at the session, on the big stage or indeed backed by a whole orchestra. The Brendan Voyage, composed by Shaun Davey is a suite of music in which the pipes represent the small boat made of leather and wood sailed by the explorer Tim Severin and his crew across the Atlantic and the orchestra takes the part of the elements and weather which the boat encountered and kept at bay on the ocean seas. It is Liam O’Flynn who really brings this piece to life.
